JLPT N1 grammar lesson 8. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N1 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 36 :

~ と思いきや

Formation :
普通形 + と思いきや

Explanation :
 “Thought … but turn out..”

Examples and meanings :

1. 試験問題は簡単だったので、満点を取れてと思いきや、名前を書くのを忘れて0点にされてしまった。
The exam was easy so I thought that I could get full marks, turns out I forgot to write my name so I got 0 point.

2. やっと道路工事が終ったので、これからは静かになるだろうと思いきや、別の工事が始まった。
Finally the road construction is over, I thought I could have my quiet now, but turns out another construction has just started.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 37 :

~ とあれば

Formation :
名・普通形 + とあれば

Explanation :
“For … then…”  (the condition in this case is a special condition).
The latter half expresses wishes, wills or judgments of the speaker to the former part/previously mentioned.

Examples and meanings :

1. 子どものためとあれば、私はどんなことでも我慢 (がまん) しますよ。
For my children, I can do anything.

2. 小さい島での一人暮らしとあれば、不自由なことも多いだろう。
There would be many inconveniences if you were to live in a small island.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 38:

~ たら最後/ ~ たが最後

Formation :
[動] た形 + ら最後/ が最後

Explanation :
“Once … then the situation is always …” (not good/negative)

Examples and meanings :

1. 兄は大酒(おおざけ)飲みだから、飲み始めたら最後酔いつぶれるまで飲んでしまう。
My older brother drinks quite a lot so once he starts drinking he just won’t stop until he passes out.

2. うちの娘はパソコンの前に座ったが最後、声をかけても返事もしない。
Once my daughter uses the computer, she won’t answer however you call her.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 39:

~ ようでは

Formation :
普通形 (ナ形ーな/ である・名ーである)+ ようでは

Explanation :
If something bad had happened (unexpected) then the result/consequence is to be unexpected as well.

Examples and meanings :

1. 小さな失敗をいちいち気にするようでは、この会社ではやっていけないよ。
If you’re upset for such tiny little failure then you can’t work at this company.

2. ああ、僕は忘れっぽくて困る。こんなにすぐ忘れるようでは、この先のことが心配だ。
Oh, I’m forgetful so it’s rather annoying. It would be worrisome for when I’m old if I’m already this forgetful while I’m young.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 40:

~ なしに(は)/ なしでは/ なくして(は)

Formation :
名/ 動(辞書形)こと + なしに(は)/ なしでは/ なくして(は)

Explanation :
“If not…, then can not…” (The latter part is negative)

Examples and meanings :

1. 資金(しきん)を確保(かくほ)することなしにはどんな計画も実行(じっこう)できない。
If there isn’t any guarantee in funding then no plan can be started.

2. あのころのことは涙なしに語(かた)ることはできない。
Stories from old times can’t be told without shedding tears.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 41:

~くらいなら

Formation

動(辞書形)+ くらいなら

Explanation :

if ..A…, then B is still better..

The speaker tell a very bad situation/state, and then tell another situation/state that is not so good but still better than the first situation/state

Examples and meanings :

満員のバスに乗るくらいなら、駅まで20分歩くほうがいい
Walking 20 minutes to the station is still better than Taking a fully clouded bus

その服、捨てるんですか。捨てるくらいなら、わたしにください。わたしが着ます。
Are you going to throw that shirt away? if you throw it away, you should give it to me, i will use it

JLPT N1 grammar structure 42:

~ (よ) うと(も)/ (よ) うが

Formation

動(う・よう形)+ と(も)/ が い形 → いかろう + と(も)/ が な形/ 名 → だろう/ であろう + と(も)/ が

Explanation :

even if… there is no affect/ no relationship

Examples and meanings :

たとえ大地震が起ころうと、このビルは安全なはずだ
even if a big earthquake happens, this building is surely still safety

社長は何を言われようが、自分のやり方を押し通した.
whatever had the other said, the director still do his own way
