JLPT N1 grammar lesson 3. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N1 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 11 :

~ といったところだ

Formation :

[名]/ [動]辞書形 + といったところだ

Explanation :

“Not that../Only..”

To describe the degree of a thing, often goes with numbers expressing small amount.

Examples and meanings :

1. 当地は夏もそれほど暑くありません。最高に暑い日でも26、7 度といったところだ
Summer in this region isn’t that hot. The hottest day is only about 26 – 27 celsius degrees.

2. この山歩き会では毎月歩きを行っていますが、参加者は毎回せいぜい6、7 人といったところだ
This mountain biking group meets up every month but each time there are only about 6 to 7 people maximum.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 12 :

~ をおいて

Formation :

[名] + をおいて

Explanation :

Beside the person/object that is mentioned in the noun, no one or thing can be equal in level or quality (no one is better).
This structure is often following with the phrase「ほか~いない・ない」

Examples and meanings :

1. 今、こんな素晴らしい色使い(いろづかい)の染色(せんしょく)ができる人は、彼をおいてほかにいない。
In today’s world, there’s no one who can dye it better than him/Beside him, no one can dye better.

2. 日本で世界的な平和会議を行うなら、広島か長崎をおいてほかに候補地は考えられない。
If the World Peace Council was to be held in Japan then I can’t think of anywhere else location beside Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 13 :

~ ならでは

 

Formation :
[名] + ならでは

Explanation :

“Only, it is only…“.

Only the said person/thing can do such amazing thing. The structure expresses high judgment towards said person/thing, often used in form「~ならではの~だ」/ 「~ならではだ」

Examples and meanings :

1. さすが歌舞伎(かぶき)俳優の一之助け(いちのすけ)さんならではの演技だ。ほれぼれするほどリアリティーがある。
Indeed it is the performance of the actor Kabuki Ichinosuke. The play was so realistic and gripping.

2. ぜひ一度ヨットに乗ってみてはいかがですか。この体験はハワイならではですよ。
You should definitely try stepping on the yacht once, what do you think? This experience is only available in Hawaii.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 14 :

~ にとどまらず

Formation :

[名]/ [動]辞書形 + にとどまらず

Explanation :

“Not only..but“.

The latter half 「にとどまらず」expresses the wider range or scale of the subject.

Examples and meanings :

1. マスメディアによる情報というものは、今や一国にとどまらず、世界中に伝わる。
The information by mass media is not limited to one country now, it is transmitted all over the world

2. 農作物(のうさくぶつ)は、台風に襲(おそ)われた直後にとどまらず、一年中その影響を受ける。
Agricultural crops are not affected immediately after being hit by a typhoon, but they are affected all year round.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 15 :

〜 をもって

Formation :

[名] (+ 助詞) + はおろか

Explanation :

“obviously, not even…“.

What mentioned in the noun before 「はおろか」is a/an obvious thing, and is emphasized not to mention it, even in a lower tone. The latter of the sentence often goes with emphasizing auxiliaries like  「 も、さえ、まで」etc..

Examples and meanings :

1. 手間がかかる料理はおろか、日常の簡単な料理を作るのさえ面倒だ。
Not to mention troublesome dishes, even making simple everyday dishes is a hassle.

2. 私は花粉症(かふんしょう)がひどくて、外ではおろか、家の中でさえマスクがはずせない。
I have a lot of hay fever. Obviously I have to wear mask outside of the house, but I can’t remove the mask even inside the house.
