JLPT N1 grammar lesson 2. Hi everyone! In this article, LearnJapanesedaily will introduce to you the JLPT N1 Grammar. Each lesson will consist of about 5 structures for you to learn step by step and have more time to practise.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 6 :


Formation :

[名] + にあって

Explanation :

Due to a circumstance/condition that an event/action happened; even in a circumstance/condition, an event/action happened anyway.
This structure is mainly used in writings.
(~のような特別な状況だからこそあることが起きる/ ~のような特別な状況でもあることが起きる → 硬い言い方)

Examples and meanings :

1. らくだは乾燥地にあって、こぶに栄養(えいよう)を蓄(たくわ)えることによって生き延びているこのである。
Due to living in dry areas that Camels survive by accumulating nutrients in their humps.

2. 明治(めいじ)時代の初め、日本はまさに発展途上期(はってんとじょうき)にあって、みな生き生きとしていた。
It’s in the first period of expansion of Meiji age that Japan bloomed.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 7 :

~ を皮切りに/ ~ を皮切りとして

Formation :

[名] + を皮切りに(して)/ を皮切りとして

Note: 皮切り(かわきり): the beginning, begin

Explanation :

Ever since an event happened, consecutive actions/events similarly happened in a good way.
This structure is not used to express/describe natural occurrences or bad things. 

Examples and meanings :

1.  この作家は自分の父親のことを書いた小説を皮切りに、次々に話題作を発展しています。
First began with a novel about his own father, his following novels were then recognized consecutively.

2. わたしたちのバンドは来月3日の東京公演を皮切りにして、全国のツアーを予定しています。
Our band starts performing in Tokyo in March 3rd next month and then will go on a world-wide tour.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 8 :

〜 に至るまで

Formation :

[名] + に至るまで(にいたるまで)

Explanation :

Even, but even,..

The noun before 「に至るまで」is a unexpected event/topic, but in this circumstance is mentioned to emphasize  “even/even this…”

Examples and meanings :

1. 私の学校は服装が厳しい。制服の着方はもちろん、ヘアスタイルやスカートの長さに至るまで注意される。
My school has very strict uniform rule. It’s okay if it’s only about clothing but even hairs and the length of the skirt are also taken into account.

2. 今度の旅行のスケジュール表は綿密(めんみつ)だ。起床(きしょう)時間から飛行機内の食事開始時間に至るまで書いてある。
The schedule this time is very detail. Even wake up time and eating time on the plane are on it.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 9 :

〜 を限りに

Formation :
[名] + を限りに

Explanation :

To announce the ending time of an event (to dd/mm/yy..) .

The noun before「を限りに」is time nouns, usually are 「今日、今回、本年度、今年」(〜の時までで、それまで続いていたことを終わりにする、と宣言する)

Examples and meanings :

1. 本年度を限りにこの講座(こうざ)の受講生(じゅこうせい)募集を行わないことになりました。
At the end of this fiscal year, we’ll stop recruiting students for the study course.

2. 今日を限りにたばこをやめるぞ!
I will quit smoking at the end of today.

JLPT N1 grammar structure 10 :

〜 をもって

Formation :
[名] + をもって/ をもちまして

Explanation :

To announce the ending time of an event, usually formal events or holidays. This structure is not used for casual events. (〜の時までで、ある行事やそれまで続いていたことを終わりにする、と宣言する → 硬い言い方)

Examples and meanings :

1. これをもって第35回卒業証書授与式を終わります。
The 35th graduation ceremony shall ends now.

2. 2月20日をもって、願書(がんしょ)受け付けを締め切ります。遅れないように出してください。
February 20th is the end of  submitting. Do remember to avoid any delay.
