Formation :

Aな+げ/げにV/げなN/げだ
Aい(remove い)+げ/げにV/げなN/げだ
Vます(remove ます)+げ/げにV/げなN/げだ

Meaning and how to use :

Express the shape, status of thing(s) that the speaker can see. Often translated as “Look(s) like”.

Examples:

彼は寂しげにベンチに座っている。
Kare ha sabishige ni benchi ni suwatte iru.
He looks lonely, sitting on the bench.

息子はうれしげに私からプレゼントをもらった。
Musuko ha ureshi geni watashi kara purezento o moratta.
My son received my gifts in a happy manner.

田中さんは勇気がありげな顔ですが、実はとても怖がっているよ。
tanaka san ha yuuki ga ari ge na kao desu ga, jitsuha totemo kowagatte iru yo.
Tanka looks like he’s putting on a brave face but he actually is very afraid.

あの人は泣きたげに見えるから、みんなで慰められました。
ano hito ha nakitage ni mieru kara, minna de nagusame rare mashi ta.
That person looks like he/she is going to cry so everyone consoled him.

どうして彼女は不安げな様子でさっそく外に出かけますか。
doushite kanojo ha fuan ge na yousu de sassoku soto ni dekake masu ka.
Why did she suddenly go out with such a uneasy face?

Note:
+) This is a literary and somewhat old-fashioned way, sometimes has idiomatic expressions.
+) Sometimes written in the Chinese letter 「気」
+) げに is a way of saying, used to impact meanings to verbs げな is to impact meanings to nouns.
