Meaning and how to use :

Describe an action that is very hard to do. It’s usually be added to Verb at continuous form and usually used with verb related to awareness (信じる、想像するなど), telling (言う).

For example

そんなに上手な彼は低い点を取るなんて信じがたいね。
Sonnani jouzu na kare ha hikui ten o toru nante shinji gatai ne.
That is incredible to believe that he got bad mark.

アルバイトをする中、得難い経験をたくさんした。
arubaito o suru naka, egatai keiken o takusan shi ta.
While working, I gained so many experiences that are hard to gain.

優しい彼女はそんなことを言うなんて想像しがたいね。
yasashii kanojo ha sonna koto o iu nante souzou shi gatai ne.
It’s hard to imagine that she gentle girl can say this things

彼は犯人だと認めがたい。
kare ha hannin da to mitome gatai.
It’s hard to admit that he’s the culprit.

夫が亡くなった。娘にそんなひどいことを言い難い。
otto ga nakunatta. Musume ni sonna hidoi koto o ii gatai.
My husband passed away. It’s hard to tell my daughter that pain.

Note: This is idiomatical way of speaking, used in old, written language
