Meaning and how to use :

1. Vる+一方(で)
Expresses the meaning “simultanously doing something at the same time with another.” or “Comparing, contrasting two things”.
Often translated as “..as well as../.. on the another hand.”

Examples:

私は毎日家事をする一方で、会社の仕事をしなきゃならない。夫は何も手伝わない。
Watashi ha mainichi kaji o suru ippou de, kaisha no shigoto o shi nakya nara nai. Otto ha nani mo tetsudawa nai.
Everyday I have to do household chores as well as work at the company. My husband doesn’t help with anything.

彼はお金がないという一方、高い車を買いました。
kare ha okane ga nai toiu ippou, takai kuruma o kai mashi ta.
He said that he didn’t have money but on the another hand he bought a brand new expensive car.

2. Connecting form: 一方では…他方では…
Expresses the meaning “On one hand.. on the other hand..”. Used to point out two opposite things.

Examples:

あの国は一方では経済が発展するが、他方では自然資源がだんだん消えてくる。
ano kuni ha ippou de ha keizai ga hatten suru ga, tahou de ha shizen shigen ga dandan kie te kuru.
On one hand, that country is economically developed but on the other hand, its natural resource is slowly disappearing.

あの人は一方では文学に対してちゃんと勉強するのに、他方では数学に対して怠けて宿題をやろうとしません。
ano hito ha ippou de ha bungaku nitaishite chanto benkyou suru noni, tahou de ha suugaku nitaishite namake te shukudai o yaro u to shi mase n.
On one hand, that person studies literature properly, but on the other hand he has no intention of doing math homeworks.

3. Expresses the connecting of a opposite event comparing to the previous event. Often used at the beginning of the sentence. Can be used as 「その一方で」

Examples:

A国の人口は増えています。一方、B国は減っています。
A koku no jinkou ha fue te i masu. Ippou, B koku ha hette i masu.
The population of country A is increasing. On the other hand, Country B is decreasing.

中村さんはいつも活発して外に出かけてばかりいます。その一方で山田さんは内気で家にいてばかりいます。
nakamura san ha itsumo kappatsu shi te soto ni dekake te bakari i masu. Sono ippou de yamada san ha uchiki de ie ni i te bakari i masu.
Mr. Nakamura is always active and goes out. On the other hand, Mr. Yamada is still shy and always at home.

4. Structure: Vる+一方だ.
Expresses a continuous status, non-stop
Describes a state that continues to grow in a certain direction. Usually used for bad situations.

Examples:

わが社の経済状況は悪くなる一方です。
waga sha no keizai joukyou ha waruku naru ippou desu.
Our company’s economic situation is getting worse.

台風は厳しくなる一方です。
taifuu ha kibishiku naru ippou desu.
The storm is getting stronger.
