Vよう(Volitional form)+とする

Meaning and how to use :

Usage 1

V ようとする/ようとした

Meaning : Describe the meaning “right before the end or beginning of something”. In this structure, we often use non-volitional verbs. But we can still use volitional verbs in some cases.

Note : We use non-volitional verbs in literary and poetic ways of speaking.

Example :

A「冬休みは終わろうとする。」
B「早いね。」
A : “Fuyu yasumi ha owarou to suru.”
B : “Hayai ne.”
A : “The winter vacation is about to end.”
B : “It’s early, isn’t it?”

電気が消えようとする。もうすぐ20時だから。
Denki ga kieyou to suru. Mousugu nijuu ji dakara.
The electric light is about to be turned off. Because it’s almost 20:00.

電車に乗ろうとするとき、誰かに呼び止められました。
Densha ni norou to suru toki, dareka ni yobi tome rare mashita.
When I was about to get on the train, someone stopped me.

ドアを閉めようとするとき、電話がかかった。
Doa wo shimeyou to suru toki, denwa ga kakatta.
When I was about to close the door, the phone rang.

彼を許そうとしたとき、彼はこんなひどいことを私に言った。
Kare wo yurusou to shita toki, kare ha konna hidoi koto wo watashi ni itta.
When I was about to forgive him, he said terrible things to me.

出かけようとする時、実家から電話があって、母が入院したそうです。
Dekake you to suru toki, jikka kara denwa ga atte, haha ga nyuuin shita sou desu.
When I was about to go out, there was a call from my home that said that my mother was hospitalized.

子供を遊びに連れようとするが、にわか雨が降って、家でいるやむを得ない。
Kodomo wo asobi ni tsureyou to suru ga, niwaka ame ga futte, ie de iru yamu wo enai.
I am about to take my kids out to play, but it suddenly rains so we have no choice but to stay at home.

お風呂に入ろうとした時、居間で変な声が出た。
Ofurou ni hairou toshita toki, ima de hen na koe ga deta.
When I was about to take a bath, a strange voice came out in the living room.

A「お前、何でここにいるの?」
B「向こうの花屋に寄ろうとした時、ここで事故がありそうだから、ちょっと何か手伝えるかここに来たよ…」

A : “Omae, nande koko ni iru no?”
B : “Mukou no hanaya ni yorou toshita toki, kokode jiko ga arisou dakara, chotto nanika tsutaeru ka koko ni kita yo….”
A : “Why are you here?”
B : “When I was about to visit the flower shop over there, it seemed there was an accident here, so I came here to help…”

日が暮れようとする。
Hi ga kure you tosuru.
It is about to be sunset.

山を登ろうとした時、雪が降って、道を見にくいのでやめました。
Yama wo noborou toshita toki, fuki ga futte, michi wo minikui node yame mashita.
When I was about to climb the mountain, it was snowing, making it difficult to see the road, so I quit.

5月、お花見が終わると、花びらが落ちろうとします。
Gogatsu, ohanami ga owaru to, hanabira ga ochirou to shimasu.
In May, when the cherry-blossom viewing is over, the petals are about to fall.

ジュースを飲もうとする時、母は飲むなと言われてしまった。
Ju-su wo nomou to suru toki, haha ha nomuna to iwarete shimatta.
When I was about to drink juice, my mother told me not to drink.

寝ろうとした時、家族からの手紙が届きました。
Nerou toshita toki, kazoku kara no tegami ga todoki mashita.
When I was about to sleep, I received a letter from my family.

私の大学生時代が始めようとする。
Watashi no daigakusei jidai ga hajimeyou to suru.
My college days are about to begin.

Usage 2

Vようとする

Meaning : Describe the meaning “to try to do something.”

Example :

彼女を助けようとしますが、彼女はいらないと言いました。
Kanojo wo tasuekyou to shimasu ga, kanojo ha iranai to iimashita.
I tried to help her, but she said she didn’t need it.

あの囚人は監獄から逃げようとしますが、結局もう一度逮捕されました。
Anoshuujin ha kangoku kara nigeyou to shimasu ga, kekkyoku mou ichido taiho sare mashita.
That prisoner tried to escape from prison, but he was eventually arrested again.

今回の日本語能力試験でN1を取ろうとします。
Konkai no nihongo nouryoku shiken de N1 wo torou toshimasu.
I try to reach N1 level in this Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

忘れようとしているが、目を閉じるとその記念は頭に浮かんでいる。
Wasure you toshiteiru ga, me wo tojiru to sono kinen ha atama ni ukande iru.
I try to forget, but when I close my eyes, that memory comes to my mind.

早く仕事を済ませようとします。
Hayaku higoto wo sumaseyou to shimasu.
I try to get my job done quickly.

この機械を動かせようとしますが、全然できない。
Kono kikai wo ugokase you to shimasu ga, zenzen dekinai.
I try to start this machine, but I can’t.

皆に知らせようとするが、誰も信じてくれない。
Mina ni shirase you to suru ga, daremo shinjite kurenai.
I try to let everyone know, but no one believes me.

A「今年は一番いい大学に入ろうとします。」
B「頑張ってね。」
A : “Kotoshi ha ichiban ii daigaku ni hairou to shimasu.”
B : “Ganbatte ne.”
A : “I try to enter the best university this year.”
B : “Good luck!”

お金を貯めて、家を買おうとします。
Okane wo tamete, ie wo kaou to shimasu.
I save money and try to buy a house.

A「田中さんとメールで連絡しようとしていますが、できなさそうです。」
B「じゃ、直接に電話したらどう?」
A  :  “Tanaka san to me-ru de renraku shiyou to shiteimasu ga, dekinasasou desu.”
B : “Ja, chokusetsu ni denwa shitara dou?”
A : “I’m trying to contact Mr. Tanaka by email, but it seems to be impossible. ”
B : “What about calling him directly?

誰か私を殺そうとしているんだ!
Darema watashi wo korosou toshite irun da!
Someone is trying to kill me!

あの人はこんなに重い荷物を一人で運ぼうとする。
Ano hito ha konna ni omoi nimotsu wo hitori de hakobou to suru.
That person tries to carry such a heavy luggage alone.

あの子どもたちは道を渡ろうとした。
Ano kodomo tachi ha michi wo watarou to shita.
Those children tried to cross the street.

A「石田くんは僕を騙そうとしているんだ!」
B「そんなことないでしょ。石田くんは誠実な人だから。」
A  :”Ishida kun ha boku wo damasou toshite irun da!”
B : “Sonna koto nai desho. Ishida kun ha seijitsu na hito dakara.”
A : “Ishida is trying to trick me!”
B : “That’s not true. Because Ishida is a sincere person.”
