Meaning and how to use :

1. Vる+までだ/までのことだ
Expresses the meaning “If the method in the previous clause can’t be done, choose another method”. Expresses the optimistic feeling when the previous clause can’t happen.

Examples:

今度のテストで悪い点を取ったら、次のテストでがんばるまでのことだ。
Kondo no tesuto de warui ten o tottara, tsugi no tesuto de ganbaru made no koto da.
If I got bad mark at this test, I will try harder at the next test.

古い車が使えなくなったら、お金がかかっても新しいのを買うまでだ。
Furui kuruma ga tsukae naku nattara, okane ga kakatte mo atarashii no o kau made da.
If the old car can’t run anymore, even if it costs money I will choose to buy a new one.

あなたはこの書類の内容が分からなかったら、私は分かりやすく書き直すまでのことだ。
Anata wa kono shorui no naiyo ga wakaranakattara, watakushi wa wakari yasuku kakinaosu made no koto da.
If you can’t understand the content of this paper, I will choose to rewrite it in a more comprehensible way.

2. Vた+までだ/までのことだ
Expresses the meaning “Because of.. that the speaker does that action.”.

Examples:

お客にお目にかかるのは上司の命令に従っているまでだ。
Okyaku ni omenikakaru no ha joushi no meirei ni shitagatte iru made da.
Because of the boss’s command that I went to meet the client.

詳しいことがぜんぜん分からない。君に山田さんの言ったことを伝えるまでのことよ。
Kuwashii koto ga zenzen wakara nai. Kun ni yamada san no itta koto o tsutaeru made no koto yo.
I don’t know the details. I only told you what Mr. Yamada told me.

考えていることを全部言うまでのことです。怒るな。
Kangae te iru koto o zenbu iu made no koto desu. Okoru na.
I’m only saying what’s on my mind. Don’t be mad.
