Meaning and how to use :

Expresses the meaning “Do not know how /whatever”. Use when you want to compare, between the two sentences where the latter is more important or higher, or have a special meaning.

Examples:

数学が得意な山田さんのような人はいざしらず、みなはちゃんと復習しないと試験ができないよ。
Suugaku ga tokui na yamada san no you na hito ha iza shira zu, mina ha chanto fukushuu shi nai to shiken ga deki nai yo.
I don’t know how people who are good with math like Mr. Yamada do, but you can’t pass the exams if you don’t study properly.

子供ならいざしらず、大人でも身の回りのことを自分でできなくて本当に困る。
Kodomo nara iza shira zu, otona de mo minomawari no koto o jibun de deki naku te hontouni komaru.
I don’t know about the children, but it would be trouublesome for adults who can’t handle things around them.

昔はいざしらず、彼女は今政府で大切な人になった。
Mukashi ha iza shira zu, kanojo ha kon seifu de taisetsu na hito ni natta.
I don’t know how was she in the past, but she’s an important person in the government now.

10歳ならいざしらず、今は20歳でも何も知らないのは大変ですよ。
Ichi zero sai nara iza shira zu, ima ha ni zero sai demo nani mo shira nai no ha taihen desu yo.
I don’t know how was you when you was 10, but for even a 20 years old to not know anything is terribly bad.

学生はいざしらず、今会社員になっても社会常識もよくない。
Gakusei ha iza shira zu, kon kaisha in ni natte mo shakai joushiki mo yoku nai.
I don’t know how the students nowadays are, but even the employees at the company have bad social knowledges.

Notes: For the example 3, the meaning is quite old and traditional.
