Let’s learn Japanese か~か grammar ka~ka :

Meaning and how to use :

1. Describe the meaning: “one between the two things is suitable”. In case there are verbs and adjectives we can use the affirmative and negative form together; it’s available for more than 2 things.
Used with the structures:
N+か+N+か
Aな+か+Aな+か
Aい+か+Aい+か
Vか+Vか

For example

明日、コンビニで弁当を買うか自分で作るか決めてください。
Ashita, konbini de bentou o kau ka jibun de tsukuru ka kime te kudasai.
Let’s decide if we will by set meals in the mart or serve it ourself.

今度の飲み会は土曜日か来週の日曜日か決まる。
kondo no nomi kai ha doyoubi ka raishuu no nichiyoubi ka kimaru.
The drinking competition is decided to held on next sunday or saturday.

外が雨か雨じゃないか出かけないと知らないよ。
soto ga ame ka ame ja nai ka dekake nai to shira nai yo.
If we don’t get to outside, we won’t know if it’s raining.

2. To give examples, particular things, typical thing amongs the things to choose.
Used with the structure: N+か+question word+か

For example

研究者はアジアかどこかで研究しているようだ。
kenkyuu sha ha ajia ka doko ka de kenkyuu shi te iru you da.
IT seems that the scientists are doing reseaches at Asia or somewhere.

今すぐに担当者の田中先生かだれか電話してください。
ima sugu ni tantou sha no tanaka sensei ka dare ka denwa shi te kudasai.
Let’s call teacher Tanaka or someone rightnow.

出発は九日かいつか決めます。
shuppatsu ha kyuu nichi ka itsuka kime masu.
We decide the start day will be 9th or someday.
