Meaning and how to use :

1. Describe event that happened in the past, present in the first clause, but it doesn’t or seem not happen in the following clause.

For example

大学を卒業したものの、まだいい仕事を見つけない。2年経ったものの、失業しています。
Daigaku o sotsugyou shi ta monono, mada ii shigoto o mitsuke nai. Ni nen tatta monono, shitsugyou shi te i masu.
I have graduated from university, but i haven’t found any good job. Two years have passed but I am still unemployed.

日本語は上手だと言ったものの実は自信がない。
nihongo ha jouzu da to itta monono jitsuha jishin ga nai.
I say I’m good at Japanese, but, actually, I’m not confident

彼はぜひ遅刻しないと言ったものの、あの日、遅刻した。
kare ha zehi chikoku shi nai to itta monono, ano hi, chikoku shi ta.
He said that I wouldn’t be late, but he was late that day

2. とはいうものの Not like what is predicted, seen

For example

彼女は25歳というものの、子供のように行動しますよ。
kanojo ha ni go sai to iu monono, kodomo no you ni koudou shi masu yo.
She has been 25, but she acts like a kid.

彼はそんなに元気な体があると見えるというものの、本当に弱いですよ。病気に何度もかかれますよ。
kare ha sonnani genki na karada ga aru to mieru to iu monono, hontouni yowai desu yo. Byouki ni nan do mo kakare masu yo.
He looks like he has a healthy body, but he’s weak. He’s even got ill several times

この仕事とはほとんど何も知らなくてもいいというものの、実はとても忙しいですよ。
kono shigoto to ha hotondo nani mo shira naku te mo ii to iu monono, jitsuha totemo isogashii desu yo.
This job sounds like we have to do little, but it’s vey busy.
