Nにもまして

Meaning and how to use :

Expresses the meaning “The action that was mentioned previously is obvious but the thing metioned after is at higher degree/level than the previous one.” Used mostly to emphasize the action/event/thing in the latter clause. Translated as “Most important is../Above all is..”

Examples:

彼は気まぐれですね。今日は昨日にもまして気が短いです。
Kare ha kimagure desu ne. Kyou ha kinou ni mo mashite ki ga mijikai desu.
He is quite moody. Today, he’s even more hot-headed than yesterday.

いい家を買いたいですから、以前にもまして一所懸命働いて、コチコチしなきゃならない。
Ii ie o kai tai desu kara, izen ni mo mashite isshokenmei hatarai te, kochikochi shi nakya nara nai.
Because I want to buy a house that I work even harder than before to earn every little money.

何にもまして幸いなことは外国で中学時代の親友にばったり会うことです。
Nani ni mo mashite saiwai na koto ha gaikoku de chuugaku jidai no shinyuu ni battari au koto desu.
The most lucky thing of all is that I came accross into my best friend in high school when I was abroad.

今は会社員だけで、大学時代にもまして熱心に外国語を勉強します。
Ima ha kaisha in dake de, daigaku jidai ni mo mashite nesshin ni gaikoku go o benkyou shi masu.
Now, even though I’m an employee but I study foreign language even harder than when I was in college.

あの作家の新しい小説は前回書いた小説にもまして内容がいいです。
Ano sakka no atarashii shousetsu ha zenkai kai ta shousetsu ni mo mashite naiyou ga ii desu.
The new novel of that author has better contents comparing to the last one.

Note:
+) The words 「何にもまして」 in Example 3 means “Above all”.
