Meaning and how to use :

1. Express “If…, if a thing happens…”. In a sentence, the first part if an event the speak has already known, or a quotation, the other part is the speaker’s prediction. In some cases, we can use “だとなると/そうだとなると”
Use with:
sentence +となると + sentence

For example

来年、あなたはアメリカに行って在留するようだ。となると、アメリカ人になるか。
Rainen, anata ha amerika ni itte zairyuu suru you da. To naru to, amerika jin ni naru ka.
Next year, I heart that you will settle in the US. If so, will you become an American?

昨日山田さんは熱を出すようです。となると、今日、彼は学校に行かないね。
kinou yamada san ha netsu o dasu you desu. To naru to, kyou, kare ha gakkou ni ika nai ne.
Yamada caught a cold yesterday. So he could be absent today, right?

2. Express the meaning “in case…”. It can be an assumption, we use 「もし…かりに」
Use with:
N/Aな(だ)+となると
A/V+となると

For example:

首都にある大学に通うとなると、ぜひお金がたくさんかかるね。
shuto ni aru daigaku ni kayou to naru to, zehi okane ga takusan kakaru ne.
If we study in a university in capital, it will cost so much.

辛い食べ物を食べるとなると、ぜひお水をたくさん飲むね。
tsurai tabemono o taberu to naru to, zehi o mizu o takusan nomu ne.
The more you eat spicy food, the more water you have to drink.

3. Express the meaning “Whenever a topic is mentioned”. The second part of the sentence usually describes an unusual attitude.

For example:

イベントに参加するスターの出場となると、みんながうるさくなる。
ibento ni sanka suru sutā no shutsujou to naru to, minna ga urusaku naru.
Whenever a star joins an event, people are set in commotion.

サッカーについての相談となると、彼はいつも興奮します。
sakkā nitsuite no soudan to naru to, kare ha itsumo koufun shi masu.
He always gets excited whenever someone talks about football.

4. Express the meaning “When we mention to…”. The second part is often about negative statement or the difficulty.

For example

この仕事の可能性に言うかとなると、誰でも確かめない。
kono shigoto no kanou sei ni iu ka to naru to, dare demo tashikame nai.
No one can measure if this thing is possible.

ゆっくり過ごす生活となると、誰でもほしいと言います。
yukkuri sugosu seikatsu to naru to, dare demo hoshii to ii masu.
Anyone wants a leisured life.
