Meaning and how to use :

1. Express “as a, in that place…also”.

賢明な学生としては先生に無理に殴られるなんて落ち着けることができない。
Kenmei na gakusei toshite ha sensei ni muri ni nagurareru nante ochitsukeru koto ga deki nai.
As a intelligent student, I can’t keep calm when being hit by the teacher.

私としてはこのことが信じできない。
watashi toshite ha kono koto ga shinjideki nai.
For me, I also cannot accept this thing.

2. “In the subject’s point of view, position, it’s…”. There are also cases which we use polite form of “…としましては/いたしましては”

For example

彼としては、一方は家族、一方は事業、本当に決めにくいね。
kare toshite ha, ippou ha kazoku, ippou ha jigyou, hontouni kime nikui ne.
In his situation, it’s hard to choose onebetween family and career.

首相としましては、国の利益は一番大切なことです。
shushou toshimashite ha, kuni no rieki ha ichiban taisetsu na koto desu.
From the prime minister’s point of view, benefit of the citizen is the most important thing.

3. compare to the normal level or normal condition, the noun (mentioned) have other value or state, it is more…

For example

今年は2月としては暖かかった。
kotoshi ha nigatsu toshite ha atatakakatta.
It is warmer than normal february (normally february is not that warm)

この料理、子供が作ったとしては本当においしいですね。
kono ryouri, kodomo ga tsukutta toshite ha hontouni oishii desu ne.
This food is cooked by children, but it’s so good. (at the level of a food cooked by a child, it is delicous, more delicious than normal)
