Meaning and how to use :

These are the two forms of polite verb – past form and negative past form.

1) V +ました is the polite past form of verb. Is used to describe thing that happened in the past.

For example

昨日の晩田中君に電話をかけました。
今朝6時に学校に行きました。
先日東京に着きました。
Kinou no ban tanaka kun ni denwa o kake mashi ta.
kesa roku ji ni gakkou ni iki mashi ta.
senjitsu toukyou ni tsuki mashi ta.

2) V + ませんでした is the polite negative past form of verb. Is used to describe thing that didn’t happen in the past.

For example

A:「先週仕事を見つけましたか。」
B:「いえ、見つけませんでした」
ei: ‘senshuu shigoto o mitsuke mashi ta ka.’
bī: ‘ie, mitsuke mase n deshi ta’
A: “Did you find any job lastweek?”
B: “No, I didn’t”

3日も朝ご飯を食べませんでした。
san nichi mo asa gohan o tabe mase n deshi ta.
I haven’t eat anything for 3 days.

店に行きましたが、何も買いませんでした。
mise ni iki mashi ta ga, nani mo kai mase n deshi ta.
I came to the store, but I didn’t buy anything.
