Meaning and how to use :

To express the meaning “are you sure../it can’t be..” and the doubts of the speaker.

Examples:

Aチームは最近弱くなっているので、今度の大会には参加するはずがない。
A chimu ha saikin yowaku natte iru node, kondo no taikai ni ha sanka suru hazu ga nai.
As team A is getting weakened recently, we can not participate in this contest.

このカメラがとても高いのでほしくても買えるはずがない。
Kono kamera ga totemo takai node hoshiku te mo kaeru hazu ga nai.
This camera is very expensive so I can’t buy it even if I want to.

先生は数学の博士だから、この簡単な問いにはわからないはずがないね。
Sensei ha suugaku no hakase da kara, kono kantan na toi ni ha wakara nai hazu ga nai ne.
The teacher is a professor in mathematics so he should understand this simple question.

母は気が長いので、僕たちにそんな小さいことで怒るはずがない。
Haha ha ki ga nagai node, boku tachi ni sonna chiisai koto de okoru hazu ga nai.
My mother is very patient so she definitely won’t be mad at us for such small things.

山田さんが離婚した?うそ、彼ははいつも奥さんを甘やかして離婚するはずがない。
Yamada san ga rikon shi ta? uso, kare ha ha itsumo okusan o amayakashi te rikon suru hazu ga nai.
Yamada is divorced? You’re lying, he always care for his wife so he most definitely is not divorced.

Note:
+) In a sentence, if “はずがない” and a negative clause is before it (example 3) then the sentence is affirmative.
+) “はずがない” is more likely to be used to emphasize than “ないはずだ”. “ないはずだ” carries more guessing meaning, while “はずがない” meaning is to confirm, ensure that the situation will happen as expected.
