Meaning and how to use :

1. Express an event in which speaker will do an action (by willpower) before the situation changes.

For example

Nippon ni iru uchi ni, ichido fujisan o nobotte mi tai.
while being in Japan, I want to try climbing mount Fuji once

toke nai uchi ni, aisukurīmu o hayaku tabe te ne
let’s eat the icecream before it begins to melt (while it isn’t melting)

akarui uchi ni, niwa no souji o shi masho u.
Let’s clean the garden up while it’s still bright

2. While an event was going on, another action happened/had happened (without willpower of the speaker)

For example

ongaku o kii te iru uchi ni nemutte shimatta.
when I was listening to music, i felt asleep

ne te iru uchi ni, dorobou ga mado kara hairare te shimatta.
While I was sleeping, the thief had broken into my house from the window

kigatsuka nai uchi ni, koinu ga sonnani ookiku nari mashi ta.
The dog has grown up so much during the time I didn’t pay attention to him.

Strike while the iron is hot
– A child who isn’t taught well soon can’t not be taught easily in the future
– When chance supposes to come, don’t lose it
