Learn Japanese for beginner lesson 2. hi everyone. In this post, Learn Japanese Daily  will introduce you the very first lessons in the Japanese course-book : Minna no nihongo (Japanese for everyone)

Learn Japanese for beginner lesson 2

Summary :

The previous lesson has introduce the general background of Japanese language. The second lesson will introduce to learners the writing system Hiragana with the first 25 letters. The requirement is to practice and to remember all the letters in such a way that learners can recognized each letter in 3 seconds.

In the first line:

The way to read from the left to the right: a,i,u,e,o

First letter: 

Way to read: a like when a doctor told you to open your mouth and you say “AHHH”

Way to write: 3 strokes

A horizontal left to right stroke

A vertical stroke cut to the first stroke

A looping stroke that starts cutting to the left through stroke, then back up the right and loops back around to the left again.

Second letter:

Way to read: i in Japanese like “e” in English such as (eat, meet…)

Way to write: 2 strokes

A slightly sloping downwards stroke that hooks up to the right.

A second slightly sloping downwards stroke.

Third letter:

Way to read: “u” in Japanese like “oo” in English such as “soon”

Way to write: 2 strokes

The second stroke is wider than the first stroke in both sides first stroke is smaller.

The first and the second stroke are not cut each other.

Fourth letter:

Way to read: “e” is pronounce like “e” in the word “elk”

Way to write: 2 strokes

The first and second stroke are not cut each other, this letter has the stroke of trapezoid, its wider when it stretch down.

Fifth letter:

Way to read: “o” is pronounce like “Ohh” like surprise on something.

Way to write: 3 strokes

A horizontal left to right stroke

The second stroke is slightly deviated to the left

The third stroke is slopping down parallel to the curved part of the second stroke.

Second line: か、き、く、け、こ 

The way to read from the left to the right: ka, ki, ku, ke, ko

First letter:

Way to read: ka in the word “camera”

Way to write: 3 strokes

First stroke starts horizontally left to right, before cutting back down under itself not quite vertically.

Second stroke cuts almost vertically through the first, going down slightly to the left.

Third stroke should be equal or higher than the second stroke.

Second letter:

Way to read: ki in the word “key”

Way to write: 3 strokes

First stroke is a horizontal stroke from left to right slopes slightly upwards.

Second similar the first.

Third stroke goes down through the first two, sloping slightly to the right, before curving back round underneath.

Third letter:

Way to read: ku

Way to write: 1 stroke

Fourth letter:

Way to read: ke in the word “kettle”

Way to write: 3 strokes

First stroke is a downwards vertical stroke that flicks up very slightly to the right

Second stroke is a horizontal stroke.

Third stroke crosses down through the second.

Fifth letter:

Way to read: ko

Way to write: 2 strokes

First stroke is a horizontal stroke from left to right.

A second horizontal stroke underneath the first.

Third line: さ、し、す、せ、そ 

The way to read from left to right: sa, shi, su, se, so

First letter:

Way to read: sa in the word “salmon”

Way to write: 2 strokes

First stroke is a horizontal.

Second stroke that starts vertically down through the first, then out to the left before hooking under itself.

Second letter:

Way to read: shi same as “she” in English

Way to write: 1 stroke like a fish-hook

Third letter:

Way to read: su like sound effect of a cigarette “suu…suu”

Way to write: 2 strokes

  • First stroke is a horizontal
  • Second stroke crosses down through the first then turn around like number 9
Fourth letter:

Way to read: se in the word “seven”

Way to write: 3 strokes

First stroke is a horizontal

Second stroke is a vertical stroke that comes down through the first stroke to the right.

Third stroke is an L-shaped stroke that comes through the first stroke to the left.

Fifth letter:

Way to read: so in the word “soul”

Way to write: 1 stroke starts with a Z-like shape.

Fourth line: た、ち、つ、て、と

Way to read from left to right: ta, chi, tsu, te, to

First letter:

Way to read: ta in the word “tab”

Way to write: 4 strokes

First stroke is a short horizontal.

Second stroke is longer vertical that cuts down through the first.

Third stroke is another short horizontal.

Final stroke below the third.

Second letter:

Way to read: chi in the word “cheese”

Way to write: 2 strokes

First a short horizontal

Second a part same as number 5

Third letter:

Way to read: tsu same as the word “surfing”

Way to write: 1 stroke is a horizontal moving right and curves back round under itself to the left.

Fourth letter:

Way to read: te in the word “telephone”

Way to write: 1 stroke starts left to right, then curves down to the left and back out again.

Fifth letter:

Way to read: to in the word “tomato”

Way to write: 2 strokes

The first stroke can be straight down or cross to the right

Second from right to left curved it in the left side

Fifth line: な、に、ぬ、ね、の 

The way to read from left to right: na, ni, nu, ne, no

First letter:

Way to read: na same as the word “nail”

Way to write: 4 strokes

First stroke is a short horizontal.

Second stroke is a vertical stroke that cuts down through the first.

Third stroke very short stroke down to the right, which hooks slightly.

Fourth stroke that starts downwards then curls round to the left and then back through itself.

Second letter:

Way to read: ni in “Nippon” is Japan

Way to write:

First stroke downwards vertical stroke that hooks up slightly to the right.

Second stroke is a horizontal.

Third stroke same as second and under this.

Third letter:

Way to read: nu same as the word “noodle”

Way to write:

First stroke is a downwards stroke that curves slightly to the right.

Second stroke that starts downwards and leftwards through the first then back up and round through it again, then curves round to the right and down before looping through itself.

Fourth letter:

Way to read: ne same as the word “next”

Way to write: 2 strokes

First is a vertical stroke

Second stroke like a signature a small horizontal across the first stroke then pull the diagonal down to the left, After that pull it high to the right side and curved it down and pull it a small curve under.

Fifth letter:

Way to read: no same as the word “no”

Way to write: 1 stroke

First stroke moves left and down before looping back up over itself, and coming back round to the base.

In conclusion, the Hiragana is one of the most important that every learners need to study from the beginning, with the first 25 letters the requirements for learners is to practice and remember to reach the standard 3 seconds for each letter.
